Low Car Diet

We've all heard of the Low Carb Diet...I've been on it myself about a hundred times. No, this one is like no diet you've ever tried. Zipcar is offering you the chance to give your car a break and will provide you with several incentives to do so...like a loaded transit pass(although if you do so in cities like Baltimore, you might be putting your life on the line)a FREE 1 year Zipcar membership with a good bit of driving time and some other neat stuff.

If you're not familiar with Zipcar, they're a relatively new company that came up with the neat idea of providing people who either don't have a car, don't want a car full time, or just prefer to use a car now and again the means to do so by using one of the Zipcars placed throughout various cities. For now, this offer is good in the following cities; Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Portland, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington D.C. But with the way this idea is catching on, it will probably be available in a location near you very soon. To check out the details, go to;

P.S. This offer is good for the period between July 21 and August 15.

What's Behind All the Emails Offering Free Stuff?

If you're like me, you probably receive about 50 emails a day telling you that you are the winning recepient of a free Airline Trip, Big Screen T.V., Ipod, Computer and lots of other great stuff. Are they for real? Actually, they are, but what happens is that once you submit your information to the place offering the prize, if you read the small print you'll find that you have to complete offers from different groups usually designated as 'Gold, Platinum, Silver' or some variation of this. To see a sample page of the type of offers you'll have to complete Click Here you'll also usually have to refer at least one and sometimes several people to the page as well.

The reason the companies can offer these deals is because they know that 95% of the people will never complete the requirements in order to redeem the prize. Therefore, they get the information of lots of people, many signing up for their offers and seldom have to give out the prizes.

If you decide to participate in one of these offers, make certain that you keep records on the offers you complete and anyone that signs up under you. While the offers are for the most part legitimate, it takes a bit of work, and sometimes money in order to get that fabulous large screen T.V. sitting in your Living room.

Getting Free Meals at Restaurants

With many people taking mom out to a restaurant today to celebrate Mother's Day, it reminds me that there are many places that will give you a free meal just to celebrate your birthday. Most large restaurant chains such as Denny's, Red Hot and Blue, IHOP and many others will give you a free meal on your birthday, but the thing is... most usually give you some leeway as to when you actually take advantage of it so that you don't have to try and eat six free meals on the same day. For instance, Damon's Grill says that the offer expires about a week after your birthday. Red, Hot and Blue on the other hand gives you a month after your birthday to take advantage of it. By signing up at several different restaurant chains, you can literally get free meals for several weeks or more.

You can find out if the restaurant chain offers a birthday club by checking at the restaurant or going to the corporate website. The terms will vary with the restaurant and some will require you to purchase another entree or dinner at equal value, but there's nothing shabby about getting your meal for 50% off and if you get your husband, wife, signficant other to do the same, you can dine in style at half the cost for at least a part of the year.

Easy Ways to Save Money on Food Purchases

The Feds have a neat way of playing with the statistics to try and convince us that the cost of goods is going up a little bit instead of a lot when they release their Consumer Price Index figures WITHOUT the cost of food and energy! Huh? For all of us living in the real world, we know just how much prices are going up, and unlike the government, we can't just exclude food and energy from our budgets. Since we can't eliminate food costs simply by moving it to another column, it is imperative to try and save money on this necessary expense, and this article looks at several easy ways to help reduce our food costs.

One of the easiest ways to save money on food is by simply being organized. When making up a list of items to be purchased, I always go through the ads to see who has what on sale, and when. You'll be amazed at how much you can save just by spending a little time looking at the Sunday ads, and seeing who has the best prices on items that you need. After making your list of stores to visit, set up a route and hit all of the stores in an orderly fashion purchasing the items on sale at each store. Don't just look at the food stores either, but look at places like drug stores who often discount many food items as 'loss leaders' to draw people into their store. After a while, you'll get a good feel for which stores have great deals on certain items, and when the items tend to go on sale. Another benefit of hitting several stores at a time is that you'll spend less time running to the stores, and use less gas in the process, saving you more money.

Another easy way to save lots of money is by belonging to one of the Wholesale clubs like Costco or B.J.'s. Don't let the idea of a membership fee keep you from belonging to at least one of these places because you'll more than make up for it in savings. The problem many people have with these type of stores is the fact that you have to buy everything in such large quantities. While this may be an issue for items like meat and other perishable foods, you can definitely save lots of money by buying non-perishables like canned goods, paper items, and many other things that have a long shelf life. If you do a co-op with a family member or friend, you can even split the purchases and the cost.

Like many people, I used to have an aversion to clipping coupons. However, my attitude about coupon clipping changed one day when I watched a woman in front of me purchase a cart full of groceries for about $17. She was an expert at using coupons to save money. If you really want to get serious about saving money with coupons, you have to be organized and only clip coupons that you're going to use. With the advent of the Internet, you can even print a lot of coupons online. A couple of sites that allow you to do this are coolsavings.com and coupons.com. Many stores also match manufacturers coupons, saving you twice as much on an item. While using coupons can save you a great deal of money, be aware of the prices of the items you're purchasing and compare them with the other brands. Although large name brand manufacturers offer coupon discounts more often than local brands, the name brand prices can be much higher, negating much of your savings. Be smart and compare.

There are some other things you can do to save money while in the store. First, avoid impulse buying. Stores place certain higher profit items at strategic places in the store, increasing the likelihood of your purchasing them. Be aware of this, and keep your hands in your pockets. Also, leaving the kids at home while shopping for food will likely decrease your impulse purchases since few parents can long resist the screaming of children wanting everything they see. Also you'll save a good bit of money by avoiding the junk or processed foods. These foods offer the most profit for stores and therefore are pushed at advertised overloaded consumers. Avoid the aisles that offer all of these 'goodies' and you'll save lots of money and your waistline.

While there are few absolutes in life, the need for food and the likelihood of this commodity continuing to increase are about as certain as death and taxes. Since none of us live in the make believe world of government statistics, it's a good idea to try and save a bit of money on this necessity whenever possible. Try implementing some of the tips mentioned here, and use your imagination to come up with some of your own.

Save 50% on Rental Cars

There are some simple things that you can do to save 50% or more on your car rental fees. For instance, if you're renting your car for a week, did you know that by renting your car on Thursday as opposed to the other days such as Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, you'll usually be charged the weekend rate, which can be up to 50% cheaper. Also booking your car rental online can save you a good bit of money since most major car rental company's offer 'Internet Discounts'. A great place to find the best rates is Car Rentals .

Are you aware that car rental companies make much of their profit from the insurance they offer? You can usually avoid these charges and save 25% or more of the total costs by avoiding this insurance. If you have full coverage auto insurance on your car, your insurance company will usually pick up the tab for damages. Also by using a major credit card to rent your car, the credit card company usually covers for damages as well. Check with your insurance agent and credit card company to see what is covered, and any exceptions.

Some things to avoid to keep from being hit with additional charges;

1)Make sure the tank is full when you bring the car back. If the car rental company sees that the tank is not topped off, they might hit you with exorbitant gas charges.

2)Bring the car back on time! If you're scheduled to have the car back at 11:00 A.M. bringing it back at 12:00 could cost you another day's charges, so make sure you're not tardy in getting the car back. On the same note, be aware that if you bring your car back early, you can also be nailed with extra charges as well. For instance, if you rent the car for a week, and bring it back in five days, they may increase your charges by hitting you with a daily rate instead of the weekly rate.

3)You might want to consider renting your car from a location away from the airport. Although rates at airports can sometimes be cheaper, after they finish adding taxes, vehicle usage fees, and other Osami Bin Laden fees, you might wind up paying a lot more. It might be cheaper to take a shuttle or cab to an off terminal location, and rent your vehicle there.

Drive a Free Car?

I've heard about people getting paid to drive their own car, and others getting a free car to drive. What I found when I checked into it is that there are companies that will pay you to place advertising in the form of 'wraparounds' on your car or the car that they provide. Not everyone qualifies for these type of programs. Whether or not you qualify depends mainly on where you live, how many miles you drive, and also where you park the vehicle. Of course you'll also need to have an excellent driving record to drive a vehicle supplied by the advertising company. There are several companies that provide directories for a fee. A couple are listed here;

Drive a FREE Car
Free Car Index

The value of these directories is that it allows you to register with numerous companies which will increase your chances of getting a car. The pay for these types of arrangements vary a good bit, so you'll definitely want to check our several.

While driving around with a hot dog pasted on your car may not be for everyone, it beats making a car payment!

Vacationing on the Cheap

I have a friend who is really cheap. He's the kind of guy that always buys the round after the last call. He's so cheap that the last time I saw him pull a dollar out of his wallet, George Washington was wearing sunglasses. I hadn't seen Cheap Charlie in a few years, and when I ran into him I was surprised when he told me that he and his wife had just come back from a vacation out on the West Coast. I thought maybe he had changed his miserly ways until his wife told me that they had swapped houses with another family from Seattle and had stayed in the couple's house in Seattle for free in exchange for letting the other family stay in their house during the same period.

It seems as if this is a growing trend, and organizations like HouseSwappers.comand HomeExchange.com have stepped in to provide a service for prospective house swappers. These type of sites maintain a database of people interested in exchanging their home for your's usually to save lots of money on hotels and car rentals while on vacation. There are quite a few things to keep in mind when considering this type of arrangement, so it would pay to do some research to find out the details of how it all works. Many of the sites out there charge for access to the database but from what I hear, it's well worth the cost, not just for the contacts, but to get a lot of good information from people who have been doing this for a while.

An excellent source of information on Home Exchange Travel is Home Exchange Travel Blog

Free Airline Travel

I had my doubts about this until it happened to me recently. On a return trip from Seattle to Baltimore, I was told at check-in that the flight was overbooked and I might not be able to get a seat on that flight. After a few minutes of standing there talking to myself, I wandered to my gate and told the attendant who I was and that I was supposely on standby. The attendant told me that yes, the flight was overbooked and if I was willing to come back the next night that I would receive a free round-trip ticket for my troubles. Unfortunately, I really had to get back the next day or I would have gladly taken advantage of the offer. Afterwards, he made an announcement of the offer, and a young lady quickly stepped up to take advantage of it.

If you're flexible with your flight plans and would like to take advantage of these type of deals, let the customer rep. at the terminal know that you are willing to be 'bumped', and you may be able to take your next flight on the airline.
